I just want to share with everyone the passing of an educational icon from the Murphysboro schools, Miss Christina Aiassi, has passed away today. She was a good friend of my husband's through her great-niece. She will be missed greatly! I don't have many details of the funeral arangements, except that visitation and details are being handled by Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. At present, visitation will be on Tuesday evening, January 10, 2005, and the funeral on Wednesday, Juanuary 11, 2005 in the afternoon. I am sure the obitiuary will be in the Southern Illinoisian newspaper. I will try to post back before to share any more information I have.
Miss Aiassi was a wonderful woman and teacher, who impacted numerous students throughout her long teaching career. I have my own recolletctions of her from grade school and junior high when she was a substitute teacher. I recall her being very strict and proper...qualities we hated back then, but now as an adult I can appreciate her style of teaching. I remember telling my parents about this mean old teacher we had when she subbed the first time and they scolded me severly for speaking about her that way. It turned out both of my parents had Miss Aiassi as a teacher back in the late 1930's and early 1940's. My 3 older sisters each had Miss Aiassi at some point in their education also so in my family alone there are 6 kids who she touched.
I remember the first time I met Miss Aiassi in a social setting...it was at the home of her great-niece, Carolyn (Grob, class of 1979) Gallegly. As Carolyn introduced me to her aunt Chrissy, I said, "It's very nice to see you again Miss Aiassi" and explained that she had been a substitute teacher of mine. Miss Aiassi laughed and very warmly told me that was great, but "please call me Chrissy." I just couldn't do it! Every time she heard me call her Miss Aiassi, she just chuckled. It took a good year or two before I could refer to her as Carolyn's great aunt Chrissy, and barely could address her as such in person. She had that big of an impact on me.
Chrissy had a long and wonderful life from what I knew of her these past few years. She was over 100 years old and until the last couple of years was a spry as a spring chicken. She was really an amazing woman with so many amazing stories...Did you know that she was one of the survivors of the tornado of 1925...or was it in 1926...I can't ever remember the exact year...just that it was the worst tornado to ever hit Murphysboro.
Well, in any case, Miss Aiassi, or Chrissy as I can call her now, will be deeply missed by her family and friends!
If you would like to share your thoughts and memories of this great lady, I think here would be a wonderful place to do so.
