We had our first meeting regarding a 25th Class Reunion and it went very well. It was nice to see Debbie Aldridge Burroughs, Kent Eaton and Mike Robinson again.
I’ve set up a separate email address for information about the reunion. The email address is murphyreunion1984@gmail.com . I will be using it from now on for any correspondence regarding the reunion.
Here is where we are at…
We are undecided on a weekend in the fall, but have a couple we’re looking at right now; both have pros and cons.
October 9, 10, & 11, 2009 – this is homecoming at Murphysboro High School against West Frankfort High School and Columbus Day weekend. This is also SIU-C Homecoming weekend with a parade Saturday morning and football game in the afternoon.
September 18, 19, & 20 – this is Apple Festival weekend and there is a home game against Benton High School. The Kiddie Parade is on Friday afternoon, Grand Parade on Saturday morning, Drums at Appletime & the Queen Pageant on Saturday evening.
(We know already that one of our favorite funny men, Todd Ellis, won’t be able to attend if we have the reunion this weekend due to his many commitments with the Apple Festival events.)
Both weekends will be busy in the area with all of the events outside of our reunion, but we need your help to decide which weekend is better. Or if you think a different time would be better such as the summer.
Please email Laura Glotfelty – Ebersohl at the new email murphyreunion1984@gmail.com and let the reunion committee know your thoughts about which weekend you would prefer.
Currently we are looking at doing the following events for the reunion.
Friday night – Attend the football game then go to a casual get together event. We are awaiting word from one of our local classmates if he can host a bonfire type get together. If not we would look at meeting up at some other location.
Saturday night – A dinner dance as we’ve done in the past.
Sunday afternoon – A family picnic as was done at the 20th reunion.
In the last couple of years there was talk about making some kind of memorial to our classmates who have died, but nothing has been decided yet. If anyone has any suggestions, please share those ideas.
So, please email us at murphyreunion1984@gmail.com and answer the following.
Which weekend do you want to see the reunion take place?
Any comments about the suggested activities for the reunion weekend?
Any suggestions for a memorial in honor of our deceased classmates?
Thanks so much!
Laura

NOT JUST ANY GRADUATING CLASS!
Class of 1976 Holds 30th Class Reunion
Murphysboro, IL (August 29, 2006) – Remember back in 1976 when gas prices were 57.9 cents per gallon, Bob Hall taught Algebra and long hair was in? Well, some things change and others come full circle. No one would have imagined cell phones, lap top computers or the Space Shuttle back then. Or, that long hair would be making a comeback. Times have changed, but the Murphysboro High School Class of 1976 will enter a time machine and go back 30 years and reminisce about fashion, music and renew old friendships on Friday and Saturday, September 15th and 16th as they celebrate their 30th Class Reunion.
The Planning Committee has been busy making plans for the “Big Celebration!” “We’ve sent Emails, post cards and have made many phone calls in an attempt to contact all 200 plus members of our graduating class.” Said Janet (Kelly) Austin, member of the planning committee. Please contact Bruce Brown via Email or phone (513.243.3208) if you have any new contact information. “We only have Email addresses for about 25% of our classmates at this time.” Brown said.
On Friday, September 15th, anyone that graduated Murphysboro High School in the 70’s is invited to a Tailgate Party at the Red Devil’s home football game. Hotdogs, chips and softdrinks will be served. There will be a social immediately following the football game at the 17th Street Bar & Grill Warehouse and Banquet Facility. Becky (Robb) Streuter said, “We are looking forward to seeing everyone that we went to school with.”
One Saturday, September 16th the Class of ’76 will be having a dinner and dance at the 17th Street Bar and Grill Warehouse. Cocktails will be served at 6:30 PM and dinner at 7:00 PM. The cost of the weekend is going to be $25 per person. Checks should be made payable to “Class of 76” and mailed to P.O. Box 1081, Murphysboro, IL 62966.
The Class of ’76 Planning Committee members are:
• Janet (Kelly) Austin – jmmos10@ll.net • Dr. Valerie (Holst) Kupferer – drmom1996@aol.com
• Becky (Robb) Streuter – catering17@hotmail.com • Terry (Picard) Lee – slee315319@yahoo.com
• Bruce & Sara Brown – bruce.brown@ae.ge.com
“Apple Festival is a great time of the year to have the reunion,” Sara (Lewis) Brown said. “We’ve not been back for Apple Festival in over 20 years.”
When asked why the Class of ’76 was not just any graduating class, Dr. Valerie (Holst) Kupferer and Terry (Picard) Lee said without hesitation, “We graduated in 1976, the Bicentennial Birthday of our nation. There was a lot of anticipation for the big 4th of July celebration.” Even our Crimson and Corn Yearbook had a red, white and blue cover that year.”
